About the Speaker:
Dr Carter was converted to Christ at an early age, but did not know what to do with the theory of evolution. He always knew what he wanted to believe, but had no way to express what he was thinking and no evidence to support his views. In his freshman year of college, he was exposed to the information for creation for the first time and soon after adopted it as his modus operandi. He says he felt a tremendous joy when he realized his science and his religion were no longer at odds. This joy (and, he says, Creation magazine and the Journal of Creation) enabled him to get through the in-depth evolutionary training of his undergraduate and graduate programs with his faith intact.

He obtained a BS in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992. He then spent four years teaching high school biology, chemistry, physics and electronics before going to the University of Miami to obtain his PhD in Marine Biology. He successfully completed this program in 2003 with a dissertation on “Cnidarian Fluorescent Proteins.” While in Miami, he studied the genetics of pigmentation in corals and other invertebrates, designed and built an aquaculture facility for Caribbean corals, performed well over 500 SCUBA dives, many of them at night, and licensed a spin-off product of his research (a patented fluorescent protein) to a biotech company. He is currently a senior scientist and speaker for Creation Ministries International-USA in Atlanta, Georgia, where he lives with his wife, Leanne, and children and is currently researching human genetics and other issues related to biblical creation.

Kent Hovind became a Christian at age sixteen and immediately desired to serve Christ with his life. His keen interest in math and science throughout his high school career prompted his enrollment at Illinois Central College as a science major. After two years of undergraduate work there, and feeling God calling him to full-time Christian service, he completed his bachelor of religious education degree at Midwestern Baptist College of Pontiac, Michigan in 1974.

For fifteen years Hovind taught high school math and science, during which time he completed his master’s degree in education. While researching and writing his doctoral dissertation on the subject of creation vs. evolution, he saw the tremendous need for exposing evolution as a dangerous, religious worldview, and for arming Christians with scientific evidence that there are no contradictions between true science and the Bible. In response to these needs, shortly after finishing his Ph.D. in religious education, he began a full-time ministry of presenting the foundational truth of creation and the utter fallacy of evolution with a mission of strengthening the faith of believers and winning the lost to Christ. His award-winning seven-part Creation Seminar continues to travel around the globe with translations in thirty-two languages.

Eugenie Scott, a former university professor, served as the executive director of NCSE from 1987 to 2014; she now serves as the chair of NCSE's Advisory Council. She has been both a researcher and an activist in the creationism/evolution controversy for over twenty-five years, and can address many components of this controversy, including educational, legal, scientific, religious, and social issues. She has received national recognition for her NCSE activities, including awards from scientific societies, educational societies, skeptics groups, and humanist groups. She holds nine honorary degrees, from McGill, Rutgers, Mt. Holyoke, the University of New Mexico, Ohio State, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Colorado College, the University of Missouri-Columbia, and Chapman University. A dynamic speaker, she offers stimulating and thought-provoking as well as entertaining lectures and workshops. Scott is the author of Evolution vs Creationism and co-editor, with Glenn Branch, of Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design Is Wrong for Our Schools.

ICR Research Associate: Nathaniel T. Jeanson, Ph.D.

When Nathaniel Jeanson graduated from high school, he hadn't yet thought about becoming a doctor and researcher in one of the most cutting edge and controversial fields in medicine today: stem cells.

"I knew that I didn't like insects or blood, but I liked science," he said in a recent phone interview.
Jeanson attended the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and studied molecular biology, though he admitted that he didn't know exactly what it was when he started. But it involved chemistry and was related to disease research, both fields that interested him, and he graduated with his bachelor's degree in 2003.

He went straight to Harvard Medical School, which he said "sounded like it would be useful for credentials and evangelism." He developed an interest in cancer research while there and worked in the stem cell laboratory. "But strictly with adult stem cells," he emphasized. Under the supervision of a noted hematologist, Jeanson focused on stem cells derived from blood cells, which is ironic, he said, since he doesn't like blood. Jeanson received his Ph.D. earlier this year and continued his research at Harvard, specifically on the role of Vitamin D in regulating blood stem cells.
Stem cell research has been a hot button issue in medical science, politics, and the media. When the Massachusetts legislature tried to overturn laws regarding the ethical use of embryonic stem cells, Jeanson and some of his colleagues were invited to submit expert testimony. While many of his colleagues favored embryonic stem cell research, Jeanson testified for the "other side" due to his creationist views.

"I didn't appear in court, but I got to submit a written testimony," he said.

When asked how he became interested in creation science, Jeanson said he grew up in a Christian home and was homeschooled until he reached high school. Playing a big role in his science education were teaching materials from the Institute for Creation Research.

"I'm a second generation creationist, you might say," he said. He explained how he saw that "salvation was inherent in creation science" and that it could be used as a tool for evangelism, another passion of his.

With a promising and lucrative career in medical research open before him, Jeanson said he underwent a career shift at Harvard. "I asked myself, 'How can I use and abuse my training to influence eternity, rather than for temporary gain?'" He considered mission work or attending seminary. He decided, instead, to seek employment at ICR, rather than continuing his research in Boston.

Some may think the decision is career suicide, especially in light of secular science's growing intolerance to views outside of the evolution-only paradigm. But he asked, "What's more important? Money or eternal friends?"

When Jeanson traveled to ICR in Dallas for his interview, he met with ICR President Dr. John Morris, ICR National Representative Dr. Randy Guliuzza, and several others. "They asked me what I was interested in doing. Research? Speaking? Writing? And I said, 'Yeah,'" he laughed.
Dr. Jeanson officially joined ICR as a research associate in September. He hopes his training can contribute to and advance the mission of ICR, while encouraging fellow believers and gaining "eternal friends."

This is the first talk entitled, "The Lost Treasures of Genesis."

The gospel message is founded on the book of Genesis. Without a keen understanding of these beginnings, much of the majesty and wonder of the "good News" is lost in a casual reading. Indeed, the treasures of what God did on our behalf can get lost amid the sweep of history.

Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson has provided a keen analysis of the "map" that God has structured in the lives and events recorded in the early chapters of Genesis. Like any set of clues, the details are very important. Each word and event becomes a literary brick in the path that leads inexorably to the "exceedingly great and precious promises" (2 Peter 1:4) of God's "inheritance...that does not fade away" (1 Peter 1:4).

After receiving his Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Harvard Medical School in 2009, Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson joined ICR as a Research Associate. Dr. Jeanson has a B.S. in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where his research efforts involved working with single-cell algae to decipher molecular mechanisms of plant function. Additionally, he has submitted testimony to the Massachusetts governing bodies in opposition to human embryonic stem cell research and has been a panelist at the Massachusetts Citizens for Life convention. As Deputy Director for Life Sciences, Dr. Jeanson’s current research at ICR involves the investigation of molecular mechanisms of biological change from a young-earth perspective. He regularly contributes research articles to ICR's monthly magazine Acts & Facts and is the author of The Lost Treasures of Genesis.
