Evolutionists Call New Plant Epigenetic Study 'Heresy' - Jeffrey Tomkins, PhD
Evolutionists Call New Plant Epigenetic Study 'Heresy'
by Jeffrey Tomkins, Ph.D. *
New research has uncovered a hidden layer of trait-determining epigenetic information that resides outside the DNA sequence in plants. This new discovery challenges the evolutionary paradigms of the scientific community and their long-standing views on how organisms adapt to changing environments at the molecular biological level of the cell. In fact, some are even calling this recent research "evolution heresy."1For over the past 50 years, Darwinian evolutionists have attributed changes in an organism's traits to the specific DNA sequences that code for them. They never anticipated a hidden layer of epigenetic information overlaying the DNA code to be directly involved in how a plant interfaces with its environment.
Both plants and animals have genetic machinery that modifies the information and function of their genomes without actually changing their genetic code. This modification process is known as "epigenetics." One of the best studied of these epigenetic processes involves the chemical tagging of DNA nucleotides across the genome using methyl groups. These "methyl tags" are attached to cytosine nucleotides in specific patterns around genes and other expressed sequences by a specialized group of proteins called methyltransferases.
This methyl-tagging system (methylation) plays a key role in determining how and when genes are turned off and on along chromosomes. The specific placement and maintenance of these methyl tags is both dynamic and precise. When a cell divides and its DNA is replicated, the duplication of its methyl-tag patterns is also copied, and this complex systems engineering is only now beginning to be understood.
A recent study of the Arabidopsis plant adds to the emerging importance of epigenetics in adaptation.1 In this project, researchers tested 80 different Arabidopsis strains that were nearly identical genetically, except for some that lacked a gene controlling proper DNA methylation patterns. Thus, the test focused on a large population of genetically similar plants that had both normal and aberrant levels of methylation in their genomes. The researchers tested the plants over several generations for flowering time and root growth.
The goal of the study was to determine if variability in these traits was passed along from generation to generation by genetic or epigenetic differences. They found that the DNA sequence in the regions of the Arabidopsis genome that control both flowering time and root length was identical for all 80 plants and did not contribute the observed variability. What they discovered was that the inherited variability for these traits was associated with methylation changes!
This whole scenario presents a variety of substantial problems for evolution...CONTINUE READING

The Multidimensional Genome - Dr. Robert Carter - Creation Super Conference 2011
The Multidimensional Genome
The human genome is an incredibly complex computer program that operates in at least four dimensions. This includes the 1-D linear string of DNA, the 2-D interactions between different parts of the 1-D string, the 3-D conformation of the DNA in the nucleus, and the changes to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd dimensions over time (making the genome 4-D).The complexity of the genome was not predicted by evolutionary theorists and their resistance to an increased understanding of this complexity has hindered scientific advancement. Not only that, but the level of complexity, even as currently understood, is extremely difficult for evolution to explain, and our knowledge of this complexity is increasing daily. In The Origin of Species, Darwin famously said, "If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down."
My challenge to the evolutionist is to explain the origin of the genome using a workable scenario that includes the source of informational changes, an account of the amount of mutation necessary, and a description of the selective forces necessary, all within the proper time frame. I claim the genome could not have arisen through naturalistic processes and, therefore, Darwin's theory absolutely breaks down.

Education
- 2003 University of Miami, Ph.D. Marine Biology
- 1992 Georgia Institute of Technology, B.S. Applied Biology
Professional Experience
- Between my undergraduate and graduate work, I spent four years teaching high school science at a large college-prep school in NW Georgia. In addition to my teaching load (including AP biology, chemistry, physics, and electronics), I spent the winter months coaching the swimming and diving teams and the summer months running the outdoor high adventure program.
- In 1996, I was awarded the three-year Maytag doctoral fellowship by the University of Miami. When that expired, I received a one-year fellowship from the Institute for Marine Science. While working on my PhD, I designed and performed many experiments in marine ecology and genetic engineering and helped to develop new protocols for the rapid cloning of fluorescent protein genes. The green and red fluorescent proteins my coworker and I cloned from hard and soft corals were used to create transgenic zebrafish. We patented one of these protein genes and licensed it to Promega, Inc. under the trade name ‘Monster Green’.
- From 2001-2004, I helped design and build an aquaculture facility for Caribbean corals at UM’s Experimental Fish Hatchery. During these years I also performed over 500 research dives on the shallow coral reefs of the Florida Keys and Bahamas. Many of these were done at night to study the mass coral spawning episodes that happen at specific times during the warm summers.
- I spent two years after obtaining my PhD working for an engineering company, mainly focused on impact mitigation for the Key West Harbor dredging project (since the channel runs right through the coral reef).
- Upon leaving Miami, I was hired by the Institute for Creation Research to help on their GENE project. While there, I wrote computer programs to analyze human genetic data and managed to get one publication on this work into the secular literature.
- In 2006, I was hired by Creation Ministries International as a scientist, speaker, and writer.

Mystery of the Genome - Dr. John Sanford - Creation Super Conference 2011
http://creation.com | Dr John Sanford, one of the world's foremost experts on genetics traces the history of human genetic decline due to mutations in our DNA. The evidence is startling to those who don't believe in the Genesis account of Creation because it refutes conventional dates for alleged human evolution. This is powerful evidence for the Bible's timescale for human history.

The Non-Mythical Adam and Eve - Dr. Robert Carter - Creation Super Conference 2011
The Non–Mythical Adam and Eve
Many people believe science has proven that Adam and Eve never existed. In this presentation, Dr. Carter digs into the science of genetics, using the most up-to-date information, to show how Adam and Eve are completely consistent with the data. Instead of discrediting Genesis, modern science affirms that we came from just two ancestors who lived only a few thousand years ago.Presented by Dr Robert Carter

Scientific Case for the Origin of Life - Mike Riddle
Mike puts the evolution theory to shame, clearly showing the "impossibility of the odds." Visit Mike's Equipping and Training Christians Ministry - train2equip.com
- There are over 2,000 types of amino acids and only 20 are used in life. Every experiment we have ever done has always ended up with an equal number of left handed and right handed amino acids. A mixture of left handed and right handed amino acids is a poison to life. Each body is full of only left handed amino acids. The tendency is always to bond the two and continue away from life; not toward life. Evolution has ruled out the truth of a Creator God, so evolutionists will accept anything in the place of the truth of God. In essence, evolutionists are saying that 3 plus 1 equals 7 because the real answer, in this case 4, is "too religious for them."
- One cell in our body is more complex than any computer we have ever built. Is it logical to conclude that a cell could evolve from natural processes? "Give it enough time and it will happen" is not a scientific statement. It is a faith-based statement. It is saying that they don't know what happened, but if we give it enough time, then something will happen. Scientists affirm that the law of probability states if the chances of something happening is over 10 to the 50th power, then it will "never" happen. The chances are 10 to the 191st power that a single protein can occur by random chance. The chances of a single cell forming by random chance is 10 to the 40,000th power! To say that life could evolve from nothing defies science and logic.
- A person can believe in evolution, but not because of the science. A person believes in evolution because of their belief system.
- Anything that violates the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics could never happen. It states, "Energy goes from a usable to less usable state over time in an isolated system." An open system is any system where you can add and remove energy. The Earth is an open system and so is nearly everything else we know. An isolated system is one where no matter or energy can get in or out. The universe is an isolated system.
- An open system (earth)
- Available energy source (sun)
- A way to capture and store raw energy
- Energy conversion mechanism
- We are all decaying. We began this decay at conception.
- Where did the immense amount of DNA come from? The only tenable answer is in Genesis 1.
Things Detrimental to the Origin of Life
1) Oxygen in the atmosphere
2) Second Law of Thermodynamics (time)
3) Water (hydrolysis)
If I tell you only part of the evidence and you believe it, you have not been taught, you have been indoctrinated. If I tell you all the evidence and you make a decision, then you have been taught.
Congress has said that we can teach both sides (e.g. evolutionism and creation). However, other agencies have tried to take away this right and scare creationists into being silent.
No scientist on this planet can tell you how life originated. Why should we accept evolution when you cannot produce the evidence? When evolutionists tell us about their faith, creationists should tell them about our faith. Evolution has no foundation for the origin of information.

Genetics According to Jesus by Dr. Rob Carter

Dr. Carter's talk is titled 'Genetics According to Jesus'. The book of Genesis is a history book, not a science book. However, the book makes some grand claims about the past that should become evident as we explore the world through science. As a sound source for the history of man, we should be able to detect the major events of Genesis through modern genetics. There are three main events that, if they occurred at all, must have left an indelible mark on our genetic makeup: Creation, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel. Each one of these can be clearly seen - if one knows where to look. Dr. Carter obtained a BS in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992. He then spent four years teaching high school biology, chemistry, physics and electronics before going to the University of Miami to obtain his PhD in Marine Biology. He successfully completed this program in 2003 with a dissertation on ‘Cnidarian Fluorescent Proteins.’ While in Miami, he studied the genetics of pigmentation in corals and other invertebrates, designed and built an aquaculture facility for Caribbean corals, performed well over 500 SCUBA dives, many of them at night, and licensed a spin-off product of his research (a patent-pending fluorescent protein) to a biotech company.
Presented at Rocky Mountain Creation Fellowship June 12, 2009.

Dr. Carter's bio from Creation.com
Dr Carter was converted to Christ at an early age, but did not know what to do with the theory of evolution. He always knew what he wanted to believe, but had no way to express what he was thinking and no evidence to support his views. In his freshman year of college, he was exposed to the information for creation for the first time and soon after adopted it as his modus operandi. He says he felt a tremendous joy when he realized his science and his religion were no longer at odds. This joy (and, he says, Creation magazine and the Journal of Creation) enabled him to get through the in-depth evolutionary training of his undergraduate and graduate programs with his faith intact.
He obtained a BS in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992. He then spent four years teaching high school biology, chemistry, physics and electronics before going to the University of Miami to obtain his PhD in Marine Biology. He successfully completed this program in 2003 with a dissertation on “Cnidarian Fluorescent Proteins.” While in Miami, he studied the genetics of pigmentation in corals and other invertebrates, designed and built an aquaculture facility for Caribbean corals, performed well over 500 SCUBA dives, many of them at night, and licensed a spin-off product of his research (a patented fluorescent protein) to a biotech company.
He is currently a senior scientist and speaker for CMI-USA in Atlanta, Georgia, where he lives with his wife, Leanne, and children and is currently researching human genetics and other issues related to biblical creation.
