#CreationDebate: Eric Hovind (#Christian) vs Bernie Dehler (#atheist) #Evidence & #Morality

On Thur. Nov. 15, 2011, Eric Hovind, President of Creation Today, (Christian, Young Earth Creationist) & Bernie Dehler (atheist, former evangelical Christian) held a debate at Portland State University, sponsored by one of the university's Christian groups. There were two main topics: evidence and morality.

The session on "evidence" dealt with questions about the "unknowns" in science, especially regarding origins. How did the universe begin to exist? How did biological life arise from non-life. If scientists can't answer these questions, does it logically follow that God did these things by miracle?

Regarding morality, Hovind presented the idea that morality seems to exist in the world as moral law, and asked "who created these laws, if not God? How could mindless nature create moral laws?" Dehler's take was that morality can largely be reasoned-out using the rubric of consequentialism, reciprocity, and consideration of individual freedom. Hovind wiped the floor with this guy.

The Ica Burial Stones of Peru by Stan Lutz

The Ica stones are a collection of over fifteen thousand carved stones discovered in the vicinity of Ica, Peru. The Ica stones display images ranging from dinosaurs to telescopes to open-heart surgery. The images on the stones were apparently created in pre-Columbian times and buried in a large number of tombs alongside Native American mummies. These stones were first written about by Spanish priests in 1575!

About the Speaker:

Stan Lutz has been to Peru and seen many of the burial sites and stones of Ica. The stones indicate that ancient man knew what dinosaurs looked like. They show man had very high degrees of technology. Mr. Lutz has been to the Cabrera Museum in Ica, Peru where there are over 11,000 stones. He has flown over the Nazca Lines and photographed many of the features that show their relationship to the stones. He has been to many of the ruins and has seen firsthand the superior technology of the ancient Peruvians.

Origin of Life - Mike Riddle

In this presentation Mike discusses why the origin of life is a major problem for people holding to a belief in evolution. By showing that there is no scientific evidence for how life could start by naturalistic processes it must ultimately be accepted by faith. Mike also talks about the fact that the teaching of evolution has replaced the teaching of good science in classrooms. Mike finishes by reading from Scripture (Romans 1:19-20) to show that God has given all the evidence for believing in a Creator God and no one has an excuse for not believing.

In this session Mike interviews Dr. Danny Faulkner (Ph.D. Astronomy) from Answers in Genesis. Dr. Danny R. Faulkner has a B.S. (Math), M.S. (Physics), M.A. and PhD (Astronomy, Indiana University). For over 25 years he was on the faculty of the University of South Carolina Lancaster, where he taught physics and astronomy. He was Chair of its Division of Math, Science, Nursing, and Public Health (2009–2012). Dr. Faulkner retired as a full professor and now holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus. In January, 2013 he joined Answers in Genesis and its Creation Museum full time. He has published more than a hundred papers in various astronomy and astrophysics journals. So far, Dr. Faulkner has published one book, Universe by Design.
